LochGoin report 2016
20 September 2016
The fishing has been tough lately as the feeding in the loch is prolific, but there are still fish being caught. The returns book is still showing catches of 1s and 2s fish per trip, so I knew there was hope. There was a few fish moving in the flat calm. I decided to use new tactics, which have worked for me at this time of year on Loch Awe. A fast sink line and size 8 gold head appetiser lure fished slow and as near to the bottom as possible. I was just off the dam wall in the boat. I only had an hour and a half to fish and didn't want to travel too far. The water was about 12 feet deep. After 20 mins the first fish was in the boat. A little porker, about 1lb spitting minnows and a belly that looked like it was about to burst.
Another 2 followed, both in perfect fighting fit condition. I thought one was a monster as I never saw it for 10 mins and couldn't raise it from the depths. It turned out it was a fiesty 2 pounder. There is still a few weeks left in the season so still worth a trip.

Well that was the annual competition. It started off very bright and totally flat calm. However later the fishing weather improved with patchy cloud cover with the wind improving as the session went on. The returns book showed quite a few blanks but some had 1 and 2 fish. This was reflected in the competition catches. 17 anglers went out and caught 5 fish with many others hooked and lost. The only Junior in the competition had 1 fish for 13 inches making Mr J Ross the new junior champion. Congratulations. The senior winner with 2 fish for 26 inches total length was Mr B McCabe. Well done him.
There was a lot of fly life about, sedges, beetles, dragon flies and the fish were taking so it is still worth getting out and having a cast.

A report from one of our new members.
"Thought I'd drop over a picture of my first fish from Loch Goin, lovely 3 1/2 lb fish taken on a Kate McLaren. I was on a day ticket whilst deciding whether to join the club or not and after taking and returning another 2 all within an hour and a half, I obviously joined. Many thanks and congratulations on providing such a welcoming and organised fishing club.

It was Piccadilly circus on the water today, 3 anglers, including my self. The most I have seen all season. It was on of these warm and windy summer's evenings. The cold evenings of the last few days have put a dampener on the fly hatches. There were some blue duns on the water and a few sedges but very few fish could be seen moving. I got 2 small trout early on an offer from one, which Matt Hayes would have called a zoo creature. I am still exploring the bank fishing so I probably spent too long fishing dead water. I did find some nice fish holding spots and managed to get a nice 1 and a half pounder out. What a fight. Airborne for most of the fight and it never gave up. It got me into one of these going home tangles. So cut my fishing short. All the anglers on the water had fish. One had 2 the other 4 and I had 3. So a good evening out. The summer doldrums have not seemed to have happened this year, or it could be the change in the stocking policy which has improved thing. If you have have a fishing report please send them in and I will get them published.
30 July 2016
The catch reports are showing 2 to 3 fish per trip with only a few blanks. So steady fishing. I only had an hour for my fishing so I was fishing from the bank. It was windy and noticeably colder. There was very little fly life about with many swallows looking for the non existing flies. There was no fish rising, but was pleasantly surprised when I started getting offers. I was getting that feeling of de ja vu. I was getting offers but no fish. I trimmed the muddler right back. Next offer hooked, on for a minute then off. So much better. I done mind loosing fish while using barbless. The next fish was good positive take, a slight heaviness on the line and I tightened into a nice 1lb brownie. Taken on the Teal blue and silver.
26 July 2016
Fish Envy. I have had a report that a 23 inch fish estimated at 4lbs has been caught by Alan Blair, his largest brownie to date. Congratulations to him. This is the time of year the larger fish makes their appearance, So well worth a try
22 July 2016
There was not much showing when I went out in the boat. The usual lies were unproductive. After a while I noticed a lot of activity on the down wind shore. The water there was only a foot or so deep and I could only manage a few casts close in before heading out to deeper water. Each time I got close to the shore I was hitting fish. " were hooked nice wee 3/4 pounder and a fish around 6 inches. Welcome none the less. It would have been better fishing from the bank, but then I would have had to deal with the midges. I met Alan Blair after the session. He had managed 2 bigger fish while fishing from the bank. A great evenings fishing. The sedge was the order of the day.
10 June 2016
The weather was much colder than it has been for a while. The returns book was mostly zero's and ones, which probably reflected the poor fishing in the very bright sunny days. Kiss of death, I brought a wee action cam to capture the event, but I wasn't disappointed, but I did have to hunt for them. I tried deep water, shallow water, rocky bottom, peaty bottom. The thing is, the next time I go up they wont be taking in the same place they will be taking some where else. I had the same cast on I have had all year. (see Gallery) same beat up flies. The muddler and the Teal blue and silver did the business here. I will put up a link to the YouTube video when I have edited it. Here it is my 3 hour evening fishing video, condensed to 10 mins
03 June 2016
Went out for a few hours fishing from the bank. Managed to winkle out another 2. It was feeling a little colder and there wasn't so much fly life.
30 May 2016
During the day it was bright and sunny. There was returns in the book mostly for 4's, 5's and one with 11 fish. Things were looking hopeful. There was one angler who had fished, all over the loch all day and had not seen or moved anything. He had returned to the boat house when he started seeing rising fish all around. The Fly life was prolific, including the midge. He got 3 in quick succession to the dry sedge. Fantastic hard fighting fish each one. It was flat calm at this point and I could see a few red sedges meandering on the surface for a while at least, before getting devoured. Its a bit like duffers fortnight when the red sedge hatch is on. Its a bit like the mayfly hatch down south.
I couldn't move anything. So decided to move to an area with a little ripple. One fish on landed and returned, a nice start to the evening. It wasn't on the large muddler but a teal blue and silver. The next fish cam to the silver invicta. It didn't matter the fly the fish were going bananas for anything. Great top of the water action that saw 9 fish in total coming to the boat.
In the returns boot there were some good catches, including a trip by the Scouts, who were doing their scouts badge. they caught 12 in total for their efforts. Well done them. I hope this will encourage some to join the club.
Click here to see the flies I have been using since the start of the season. As you will see they are getting well worn but still catching fish.
14 April 2016
There has been plenty of this as the new fish settle in and spread out to find their feeding stations. Should be steady fishing from the shallows as this tends to be the warmest place in the loch at this time of year.
